Sanjay Nahar – Founder of Sarhad An Extraordinary Indian who works in India’s Most troubled zones
Sanjay Nahar took to social work very early in life. He felt compelled to work on the issues of social and national importance. The polarization of the society on communal lines disturbed young Sanjay Nahar. He had found the mission of his life: To work towards bringing people and communities together. In 1984, he founded Vande Mataram, a social organization dedicated to the cause of national integration.
He started his peace efforts in Punjab by establishing people-to-people contact with those affected by violence there. Around 1990, militancy reared its head in Jammu & Kashmir. Seeing the havoc violence created in the life of normal citizens, all his activities since, are focused on helping the affected people cope with their loss and to rehabilitate them. Through Sarhad, founded in 1995, Sanjay particularly worked for the women and children in Kashmir through various initiatives like the Know India Tours for the young Kashmiri children to expand their vision, AAASH (meaning Hope) project to offer poor Kashmiri women a way to respectfully earn livelihood through traditional art and helping the bright Kashmiri youths get access to safe, higher and uninterrupted education in reputed educational institutions in Maharashtra and thereby an opportunity to seek good careers.
Music is the greatest healer. Nothing brings people closer better than music. Music, dance, theatre and films together provide a potent medium of expression especially for the youth. Therefore, to promote and showcase Kashmiri music and dance and their artistes before the discerning audiences in Pune, Maharashtra Sarhad incepted the yearly Kashmir Cultural Festival of dance and music in Pune in 2008.
